Can you give examples of people who have advanced in the company and how they did it?
We love helping creative people advance their careers and frequently give them breaks and the support needed to make a success of them.
Most recently, Lizzie Kempton directed her first documentary – Manchester Bomb: Our Story. The film has won an RTS award and an O2 award, and is shortlisted for the Broadcast Awards 2019. We also had two team members in the 2018 Broadcast Hot Shots: production manager Hayley Rivett and assistant producer Shauna Botrel.
We work hard to convince channels to let us use new PDs and support them in the process. Dan Harrison, who has worked for us as an AP, is making his first hour-long documentary, a Dispatches film for Channel 4.
What one thing would make your company more attractive for staff – and how will you do this?
We would really love more returning series and more guaranteed work, so that people could stay with us for longer. It can be frustrating to train people up, only to lose them to other companies at the end of our projects.
Initiatives to lure production talent to the north would be incredibly useful. While we welcome the large indies moving to Manchester and Leeds, there is a shortage of production talent and editors, and we feel this could be helped with some joined-up thinking and funding from the channels.
What is the best way to celebrate staff success?
We have a Zinc Media Group newsletter to share successes. More locally, we have Friday wine, celebratory nights out, and we try to celebrate award nominations across the board. We invite as many team members as possible to awards ceremonies.
