Road safety education programme

Behaviour change

Influencing long-term behavioural change among pre-schoolers in London

Children’s Traffic Club London is Transport for London’s Road Safety Pre-school Intervention Education Programme. It’s a London-centric resource that makes a positive contribution towards reducing child casualties through developing and influencing attitudinal and behavioural change towards road safety.

The programme ensures young children and their parents (and carers) are engaged with fun activities, while building key risk awareness skills and promoting lifesaving road safety and active travel messages. It highlights the diversity of the Greater London environment throughout and ensures accessibility for all groups living in London.

CTC London embraces the technology available for this age group and provides a multi-media framework by offering a truly cross-platform resource for children aged 3 to 4 and their parent (or carer). A child’s free membership begins when they receive their printed pack with a storybook, log book and travel diary, membership certificate and sticker sheets, and a unique code to unlock content online.

Online, children discover interactive content with familiar London landmarks that are brought to life with animation, sound effects, pop-up messages and talking text. Games reinforce road safety and active travel messages, as well as specially-commissioned song lyrics set to well-known nursery tunes, which encourage children to sing along. Members can track their progress using a London ‘tube’ style map which links to each story and game they engage with.

There is also an app to download free from iTunes or Google Play, so that children can play when on the move – a great time for safety messages to be reinforced.
